Frequently Asked Questions
What Was a Knight’s Complete Suit of Armor?
In the Middle Ages, knights primarily used two types of armor for protection: chain mail and solid plate armor. Contrary to the common portrayal of knights in shining armor in pop culture, they were not the only ones to wear armor. In battle, knights were accompanied by foot soldiers, who were also armored for protection.
Chain mail, crafted from thousands of interlinked iron rings, provided protection while allowing for mobility. It typically included a hooded coat known as a hauberk, along with trousers, gloves, and shoes, covering the entire body of the knight.
Plate armor, on the other hand, was composed of various metal plates and parts, such as a breastplate, helmet, gauntlets, and sabatons, offering full-body coverage. This type of armor was often worn over a chain mail shirt for extra protection. Plate armor was designed to be mobile; the metal parts were not excessively heavy and were joined by movable rivets and leather straps, allowing for a range of movement.
What Are Your Armors Made Of?
At Medieval Collectibles, our armors are expertly crafted from high-quality steel or aluminum, with a keen focus on perfection. Many of our pieces are custom-designed to replicate authentic medieval suits, historically worn for protection in field battles.
Each armor is composed of individual lames (metal strips) and plates, meticulously curved to conform to the contours of a person’s limbs. These metal components are connected using movable connectors or fasteners, ensuring that the armor is fully articulated. This design feature means you display these armors and wear them for reenactments, costume events, or other suitable occasions!
How Much Does a Medieval Knight’s Armor Weigh?
The average weight of an entire armor ranges from 45 to 55 pounds (20 to 25 kilograms) while the helmet weighs between 4 to 8 pounds (2 to 4 kilograms), according to this article by the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
The Medieval Collectibles’ full suit of plate armor, including the breastplate, gauntlet, and helmets, together with the base, weighs between 70 to 118 pounds (31 to 86 kilograms). All our armors come with a wooden base and stand while some also come with a sword.
Our armors can be used for decoration or worn for live-action role plays, cosplays, historical reenactments, or theater plays.
